It is with heavy hearts that we share the sad news of the passing of Florida Highwaymen artist R.L. “Robert” Lewis (1941–2026). Mr. Lewis was a cherished member of the Florida Highwaymen — a remarkable group of self-taught Black landscape painters whose vibrant depictions of Florida’s natural beauty are recognized as an important chapter in America’s and Florida’s art history.
Mr. Lewis was more than an exceptional artist — he was an early supporter of our Gallery from the very beginning. He generously came to our first location in our opening year to share his work, offer a painting demonstration, and help launch our creative community. Most recently, in July 2024, he returned to Lake City with his son, Robert, to give another engaging demonstration and to share his personal history and deep knowledge of the Highwaymen legacy. His stories, his talent, and his warm presence left a lasting impression on all who attended.
Through his decades of painting, teaching, and sharing the Highwaymen tradition, Mr. Lewis helped keep the spirit and history of this unique movement alive for new generations of artists and art lovers.
We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time. He will be greatly missed, but his work and his legacy will continue to inspire.
