We’re pleased to welcome Nancy Derheimer to the Gallery for a special batik workshop on February 7. Nancy will be visiting us for only a few weeks in February, making this a limited opportunity to learn from an artist with decades of experience in fiber arts. Originally from Michigan, Nancy has lived in Greensburg, Indiana since 2009. She graduated from Eastern Michigan University with a teaching degree in 1965 and has spent a lifetime engaged in both learning and making. Her creative path began early—encouraged by a mother determined to keep eight children busy, no art material or medium went unexplored. Today, Nancy is best known as a fiber artist, though her work spans many materials, including paper, clay, and metal. She enjoys experimenting with watercolor, pen, and ink, but her more serious artistic focus is on dye, wax, and fabric. Batik, in particular, appeals to her for its hands-on nature and its often unexpected results—something she embraces as part of the creative experience. When she’s not working with wax and dye, Nancy cuts and assembles fabric—mostly hand-dyed—to create collages. Her most recent work combines batik with quilting techniques, including fabric-based portrait pieces. Her portfolio includes many award-winning works shown throughout small towns in her region.
Batik itself is a traditional resist-dye technique that uses wax and layers of color to create richly patterned textiles. In this workshop, students will be introduced to the fundamentals of the medium while creating their own work. Participants will also build a reusable stretching frame, which they can take home and use for future batik projects.
If you’ve been curious about batiks or are looking to expand your fiber art practice, this workshop offers a rare chance to study with an experienced artist during her short stay with us in February.
SOLD OUT. Call or stop by the Gallery to get on our waiting list for future batik workshops.
